Learner driver's questions

What vehicle can I drive?
Provided the policy is purchased in your name, you can drive any vehicle valued at less than £20,000 and in insurance group 29 (1-50 grouping ) or lower and kept at an acceptable postcode. Our application process will check the insurance group to ensure the car qualifies for cover.

How old do I need to be to take out Covered Learner Driver insurance?
You can be any age, provided you hold a UK provisional driving licence.

Does the car need to be insured elsewhere?
Yes. Our policy provides cover for the vehicle while the learner driver is in control of the vehicle named in our documentation. The registered owner/keeper of the vehicle must have a current motor insurance policy in place.

The majority of learner driver policies do not offer any cover if the learner driver owns the vehicle they are learning to drive in. If the registered keeper of the vehicle is the learner driver you need our new owner policy. This can be purchased at www.coveredownerlearnerdriver.com

Can I use my Covered Learner Driver policy to tax my car?
No. The registered keeper has to use the main insurance policy in place for the vehicle.

If I have a Covered Learner Driver policy and have a fault accident in my parents'/relatives'/friends' car, will it affect their insurance policy?
No.

Can I insure more than one vehicle?
You can cover as many vehicles as you wish, provided you purchase a separate policy for each vehicle.

How many learner drivers can drive the vehicle I insure?
Your Covered Learner Driver policy covers the named policy holder only.

What is the excess on a Covered Learner Driver policy?
We offer a choice of policy excess £250 and £500. The excess you have selected is shown on your schedule. No windscreen cover is provided. The excess selected on your initial policy remains in place for the duration of that policy.

Who can supervise me in the insured vehicle ?
The person supervising you whilst learning to drive must hold a current full UK/EU/EEA Driving Licence, be over 25 years of age and held a full UK/EU/EEA Driving Licence for a minimum of 3 years and has been a resident in the United Kingdom for a minimum of 2 years or a current qualified Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Examiner or current DVSA registered qualified Approved or Potential Driving Instructor (ADI/PDI).

Can I change cars?
It is possible to change your vehicle mid-term. A non-refundable £15 administration fee will be charged for any amendments.

What happens to my cover when I pass my driving test?
All cover under the policy will cease as soon as you pass your DVSA Practical Driving Test, other than the limited cover shown below, and you must return your certificate of insurance to the administrator for cancellation as soon as practicably possible. Any return of premium due to you will be calculated at a proportional daily rate depending on how long the policy has been in force, less a £20 administration fee. If you have made a claim the full premium is due.

If you pass your official DVSA Practical Driving Test cover is provided for the accompanying driver to return the car to your home or its normal garaging address.

Are there any drivers that Covered Learner Driver is unable to insure?
Unfortunately there are certain categories of individual and vehicle for whom we are unable to provide cover. This comprises those drivers whose main income is derived from taking part in professional sports or entertaining the public; those drivers with any motor fault accident claims against them, excluding windscreen cover; those drivers with any convictions pending and those drivers who haven't been a resident in the UK for more than 2 years. Certain postcodes are also excluded.
